James Bartlett Garrison "Bart"

Bart Garrison was born in 1960, the third child, second son, of Juanita and T. Ed. Garrison, Jr. He went to Welcome Baptist Church with his family and became a member at a young age. Bart went to Pendleton High School and was active with football, basketball (played in the old "dog house") and golf teams. He worked hard growing up on the farm, working in the fields as well as milking cows.

After high school, he went to Clemson University and majored in Dairy Science. At Clemson, Bart was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and a JV Cheerleader. The skills he learned majoring in dairy science at Clemson helped with his breeding a top quality herd of Holsteins when he returned to Denver Downs to work on the family farm.

A friend to everyone he met, he impacted many lives especially with his coaching of little league basketball in Pendleton. Bart lived life to the fullest. He became a pilot and enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and was a talented golfer. In January 1989, upon the retirement of their father, Bart and Brother Tom leased and began operating Denver Downs farm. On May 9th, 1990, Bart, Tom, and an employee Matthew Pickens were inside one of the grain silos, preparing it for newly harvested silage. An avalanche of silage came down, burying the 3 men. Miraculously, Tom survived. But tragically Bart and Matthew were asphyxiated.

Bart is buried across Clemson Highway, in the small cemetery of Welcome church, which had been organized in his grandfather's house almost one hundred years earlier. Bart's love for family, friends and love of life will live on with everyone who new him. A scholarship at Clemson is established in Bart's memory. We miss you Bart!
